Maurice DUNNE Sr. was born 12 Jan 1808 in Wicklow Co, Ireland, and died 17 Jan 1888 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL. He married Margery Marcella NEW in Avoca, Wicklow Co, Ireland, 24 Sep 1832 [St. Joseph's Church Templerainey, Avoca, witnesses: John NEW and Mary DARCY]. Margery was born in Barne's Parish, New Bridge, Wicklow Co, Ireland in 1816, the daughter of Joseph NEW and Sarah DILLON. Margery died 18 Dec 1890 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL. Maurice and Margery are interred in Catholic Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL.

Maurice, Marcella, and Joseph arrived at Castle Garden, New York on 29 May 1834. The ship they traveled on was the St. Lawrence. The port of departure was Dublin, Ireland. Maurice's name was spelled "Nmorris". He was listed as a 25 year old carpenter. Marcella's name was spelled "Marsella". She was listed as a 20 year old housewife. Joseph was listed as a 1 year old child youngster. Other Dunns listed on the vessel were Sams., 26 carpenter, and Ann, 20, wife. There were no persons with the surname New listed on the vessel.

Castle Garden, today known as Castle Clinton National Monument, is the major landmark within The Battery, the 23 acre waterfront park at the tip of Manhattan. From 1855 to 1890, the Castle was America's first official immigration center, a pioneering collaboration of New York State and New York City.

"The 1841 potato crop set-back recorded by Elizabeth mirrored similar partial crop failures including those of 1816 and 1821 and, in addition, several forms of blight or disease had also struck. The first of these came as early as the middle of the eighteenth century and was known as 'the curl'. The 'serious blight' mentioned above would have occured around 1833, a year after Maurice and Marcella's wedding. Maurice, Margery and their son, Joseph, emigrated in 1834 and landed at Boston, MA.

Family folklore says they, along with Margery's brother, William NEW, lived in Boston when they first arrived in America and a brother of Maurice's sought work one day and never returned. The family assumed that he was murdered.

They were listed as a resident in the census report in Brown Co, IL, Sheet 168, Line 29, 1840. On March 10, 1843 Maurice, while a resident of Morgan county, Illinois, purchased 40 acres of land in Brown County, Illinois. The patent certificate number is 16211. The legal description of the land is: "the North East quarter of the South East quarter of Section fourteen, in Township one North, of Range four West, in the District of lands subject to sale at Quincy, Illinois".

Margery's brother, William NEW, purchased 40 acres of land on the same section the following year on July 10, 1844. The patent certificate number is 16524 and the legal description is: "the South East quarter of the South East quarter of Section Fourteen, in Township One North, of Range Four West, in the District of lands subject to sale at Quincy, Illinois".

Maurice DUNNE Sr. and Margery Marcella NEW had the following children:
i. Joseph DUNN was born in Avoca, Wicklow Co, Ireland 8 Jul 1833. Joseph died 31 Mar 1864 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL. His body was interred in Catholic Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL. Joseph was a member, "blacksmith", of Company K, 10th Illinois, Calvary during the Civil War. He came home on furlough very ill and died from dysentery.
2. ii. Dennis DUNN was born 13 Feb 1840 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL, and died 26 Oct 1896 in Pomona, Howell Co, MO. He married Bridget Ellen HAIRE 22 Jan 1878 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL, daughter of John HAIRE and Bridget EGAN. She was born 22 Jan 1853 in Jacksonville, Morgan Co, IL, and died 27 Jan 1927 in Pomona, Howell Co, MO. They are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, White Church, Howell Co, MO.

        i. Kathryn Mae DUNN was born 11 May 1879, IL; died Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO. She is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery , Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO.
      4. ii. Joseph Francis DUNN was born 29 Dec 1881 in IL, and died 4 Apr 1957 in Jacksonville, Morgan Co, IL. He married Lena Mae SPENCER 1914 in Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO, daughter of Orlando SPENCER and Salena BOYD. She was born 5 Oct 1887, and died 20 Mar 1982 in Clarksville, Bremer Co, IA. Lena is buried in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, Johnson Co, KS. They had four children.
      5. iii. John Patrick DUNN was born 13 Jul 1883 in Jacksonville, Morgan Co, IL, and died 4 Mar 1963 in Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO. He married Martha Francis "Mattie" SULLIVAN 7 Oct 1908 in Atchison, Atchison Co, KS, daughter of Jerimiah SULLIVAN and Catherine COX. She was born 05 Sep 1889 in Russell Springs, IA, and died 20 Apr 1966 in Houston, Harris Co, TX. They are buried in Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO. They had nine children.
        iv. Tommie DUNN was born 11 Jan 1885.
        v. Jane Cecilia DUNN was born 05 Sep 1886, IL; died 30 Dec 1962, Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO.
      6. vi. Marcella Bridget DUNN was born 21 Jul 1888 in Jacksonville, Morgan Co, IL, and died 10 Sep 1971 in W. Plains, Howell Co, MO. She married George W. EIDSON 17 Feb 1912 in White Church, Howell Co, MO. He was born 12 Apr 1888 in Howell Co, MO, and died 10 Dec 1972 in Pomona, Howell Co, MO. They are buried in Howell Memorial Park, Howell Co, MO. They had one child.
        vii. Pete Leo DUNN was born 10 Nov 1890, IL; died Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO; married Martha JOHNSON. They are buried in Kansas City, Jacskon Co, MO.
      7. viii. Jacob Maurice "Jake" DUNN was born 21 Dec 1892 in IL, and died Jun 1972 in Poplar Bluff, Butler Co, MO. He had four children.
3. iii. Maurice DUNN Jr. was born 29 Jan 1844 in Brown Co, IL, and died 10 Feb 1926 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL. He married Mary Ann HAIRE 1870 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL, daughter of John HAIRE and Bridget EGAN. She was born 20 Jun 1847 in Illinois, and died 16 Nov 1922 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL. They are buried in Catholic Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL.

He married Mabelle PERREAULT in Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co, NM, daughter of George PERREAULT and Artemise REGNIER. She was born 15 Jan 1883 in St. Ann, Kankakee Co, IL, and died 1955. They had two children.
      9. iii. Sadie Frances DUNN was born 24 Feb 1875 in Elliot, Ford Co, IL, and died 4 Nov 1902 in Chicago, Cook Co, IL. She married Cicero HARRIS 1 Aug 1894. He was born 1870, and died 23 Dec 1945 in Adams Co, IL. They are buried in Catholic Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL. They had three children.
      iv. George DUNN was born Dec 1877, Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL; died 1935, Jacksonville, Morgan Co, IL.
      10. v. Charles Edward DUNN was born 25 Dec 1877 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL, and died 10 Mar 1960 in Bismarck, Burleigh Co, ND. He married Mary RITCHIE 23 Apr 1906 in Springfield, Sangamon Co, IL, daughter of Alexander RITCHIE. She was born 24 Oct 1874 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL, and died 9 Aug 1959 in Bismarck, Burleigh Co, ND. They had one child.

      11. vii. James Maurice DUNN was born 23 Sep 1882 in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL, and died 24 Feb 1969 in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Sangamon Co, IL. He married Mary Marie WOODS 26 Nov 1919 in Peoria, Peoria Co, IL, daughter of Julius WOODS and Amanda REEVES. She was born 23 Apr 1895 in Brown Co, IL, and died 18 Oct 1966 in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Sangamon Co, IL. They are buried in Calvary Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon Co, IL. They had eight children.
