William was a farmer when
he died in 1844 in Castletimon. He farmed approximately 116 acres
of quality pasture land in Castletimon. When he died in 1844
his wife Anne ran the farm. I don't know who ran the farm when
she died in 1860. This land was leased from a wealthy landlord
as was usually the case at this time. Roman Catholics lost their
land from the 1640's onwards and it was only in the later part
of the 19th century after land reform acts that they started
to acquire freeholds again. Nearby the New farm was another farm
of 168 acres in Dunganstown leased by Denis Finn, born 1796 near
Arklow. Joseph New married his daughter Mary Finn in Barndarrig
Chapel (near Castletimon) in 1867. Mary New was registrar of
Arklow Cemetery for more than 30 years until she died in 1922.
She was interred in Arklow cemetery and given a fine plot inside
the entrance with a large gravestone sculpted by her son Joseph. - Bob Hickson
